What Youth Group Has Taught Me

I have been attending Evangelical Free Church of Oroville since I was 6 years old, and I have been involved in the youth group here since 7th grade. I remember being terrified to go to youth group when I was younger, because I was scared that no one would talk to me and that I would feel lonely. However, after my time there, I now feel the complete opposite. Youth group helped me to open up, to make some amazing lifelong friends, and showed me not only that I needed a relationship with the Lord, but also taught me how to have one. I know for a fact that I would not be where I am today if I had not gotten involved in youth group 6 years ago.

I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity to be Student Ministries intern this summer. I remember the past summer interns being there for me, planning fun events, and just simply talking to me. They impacted me more than they know and being able to follow in their footsteps was an amazing experience. I went on the mission trip to Paradise at the beginning of the summer, and then attended and helped with youth camp at Hartstone Bible Camp. Being able to go on those trips as an intern and remembering what it was like going when I was younger, has given me a greater appreciation for how much work goes into it. I also appreciate all of the volunteers that go just because they love the Lord so much and want to help others learn to love Him too.

This summer, I also led a girls breakfast Bible study where we were able to talk through the difference between being a woman of the world, and the woman that God created us to be. Getting to know the girls better and watching them become less shy and more excited to go to youth group and Bible study was definitely the highlight of my time here. They’ve all had a huge impact on me as well this summer and have encouraged me to keep growing in my faith as I’ve watched them grow in theirs.

I’d like to thank Pastor Brian for all his constant hard work, and for always being there for each and every one of us. He cares about all his students no matter what and our youth group would not be possible without him. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity I’ve had to grow and learn so much this summer. Thank you church for supporting me and the Student Ministries!

Sincerely,

Bekah Gentry
