Oroville Christian School

The Oroville Christian School Board would like to share some exciting news regarding staff and the 2020/21 school year!  Earlier this year we were faced with the task of selecting a new school administrator.  Our beloved sister, Debra Ward who has served as both a teacher and administrator for OCS for a number of years, will be retiring at the end of this month (well-deserved we might add).  She has faithfully served the students, families and staff; the board is especially gratefully for her leadership and willingness to take on tough tasks – she will be deeply missed.

These past few months with COVID-19, meant that our school was not able to function as usual, teachers had to work long hours learning new ways to teach and engage students, end of school activities and milestones such as graduations—were not able to take place as planned, and families had to embrace distance learning and its challenges.  But, as you know, one thing does not change with the ebb and flow of things like COVID-19...that is the Lord, His truth, His love and His Word.  Oroville Christian School’s commitment to these unchanging, unwavering truths remains unshaken. The school has plans to reopen for traditional school in August...will there be some changes in how we do things--yes...but hand sanitizer, temperature checks, staggered lunch times and Plexiglas barriers will not cause us to lose sight of our mission: to assist parents in preparing their children for life by leading them to Christ, equipping them with strong academic skills, developing a sound biblical world view, and nurturing godly character.  Please be in prayer with us as we seek wisdom in the planning and preparing for the 2020/21 school year.  The school is still developing plans & contingencies, is still in need of a full-time teacher and 2 support staff, and is also working with a new administrator.

Some wonderful news – we have found a new school administrator: Mr. Mark Bates.  The school board is so thankful for his willingness to jump into this new role during these unique times in education.  We are VERY thankful that the Lord brought us such a timely answer to our prayers.  We hope you get a chance to meet him and his wife this summer!!

Greetings Evangelical Free Church of Oroville -

It is with great anticipation that I write this to introduce myself to you as the Oroville Christian School administrator. With over 30 years of experience in Christian education as a principal, athletic director, math instructor, and coach, I am excited for the next chapter that God will write for my life.

I have a passion for Christian education. It provides a unique opportunity to partner with parents and the church in evangelizing and discipling young people. What a great responsibility we have to use the interactions in the classroom, on the stage, on the court, and on the field to model our love for God and our love for each other (Matthew 22:37-39).

As I move into my new role, I look forward to partnering with the church to continue the work God has done at Oroville Christian.  In the same way we strive for spiritual formation and academic excellence, I want each of our students to involve themselves in the activities that interest them.  God has gifted each one of them with talents.  While working to hone their artistic expression and competing with athletic distinction, our students will learn teamwork, cooperation, and humility, which are skills necessary to succeed in education and life.

Both my wife and I grew up in Southern California and attended and graduated from Christian schools, a couple being very similar to Oroville Christian.  It was at those schools where some godly teachers and coaches invested in both of our lives and instilled a love for God and a love for others.  In fact, Allison and I were introduced because a friend of mine from high school married a friend of hers from high school.

As we look to the future, Allison and I are excited to find out what God is doing at both the church and the school and continue the legacy of so many who have come before us (Proverbs 13:22).

Go Eagles!

Mark and Allison Bates
