Walking by Faith or by Sight?
Read Psalm 42:
What you dwell on or keep telling yourself affects you spiritually, emotionally, physically, and socially. For example, Proverbs 12:25 relates that; “Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad” (NKJV).
Throughout Psalm 42 we see the psalmist in the midst of distress and how he vacillates between faith (spiritual realities) and sight (human emotions, life circumstances, self-focus). He yearns for God but is struggling with the process of choosing to trust Him through faith.
vv. 1-2 Faith says hope: Yearn for God and His life-giving water. God is the object of what
the soul craves when in doubt.
vv. 3-4 Sight says despair Unending tears, pain, sorrow, mourning, and agony.
Question – Where are You, God?
v. 5 Faith says hope: Stop, think on what is true, hope in God, and praise Him.
vv. 6-7 Sight says despair I’m in a drought that God has allowed and quickly moving to
v. 8 Faith says hope: Have confidence in God. Remember the covenant love of the
Lord and have confidence in His faithfulness.
vv. 9-10 Sight says despair, doubt: Yes, I know God is my Rock, BUT He has forgotten me. People ask,
"Where is your God?"
v. 11 Faith says hope: Hope in God – He IS my salvation.
Faith results in hope, which leads you away from despair. When trials and tribulations come, remind yourself of who God is, what He has done, and what He has promised to do. Ask God what He wants you to learn. Read Philippians 4:6-9, meditate on the things that will result in the peace God gives. Remind yourself of God’s promises in the Scriptures. Make a list and dwell on them daily.
He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5, Joshua 1:5)
His love is everlasting love (Psalms 103:17)
He has not left you comfortless (John 14:18 KJV)
He is your strength (Psalms 28:7)
He sees you – He knows your rising up and sitting down (Psalms 28:7)
He even bottles your tears (Psalms 56:8 NKJV)
As you dwell on Scriptures, you will discover that hope is built on Jesus Christ and His righteousness alone (Romans 5:1-5). Psalm 27:13-14 warns that you will despair unless you choose to look for the goodness of God in your life circumstances. While you are dwelling on God’s goodness, His attributes, and His promises, He will strengthen, build, and mature your faith in Him. Nothing is permitted in your life without purpose, Therefore, you can trust God’s goodness in all things, even death, because Christ’s death, burial, and Resurrection shows you that His is the victory! Ask God to help you walk by faith, not by sight, today.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
