All things become new! Here we are again in the beginning of a new year with many opportunities before us. OCS is facing this new year with challenges presented to us beyond our control. The state passed legislation that requires all private schools to pay a minimum salary to its full-time teachers. This challenge hits OCS with having to come up with approximately $35,000 more a year just to cover existing staff. This law went into effect on January 1st 2018.
Though it was a surprise to us when we were informed about it this fall, the Lord already knew it was coming and made provision for the school. The school budget for 2017-2018 was based on 112 students. However, the Lord in His goodness brought seven more students this school year. With the additional students and a couple of staff members opting out of medical benefits, the school should end this fiscal year in the black. Praise the Lord!
This legislation is going to make it a challenge for private Christian Schools to stay in operation. I would like to ask you to pray for this issue, not only for OCS but all Christian schools throughout California. As a school board we are taking steps to remain fiscally responsible. One of the action steps we have taken is to begin a five-year phasing out plan of multi-sibling discounts. This phase out process won’t help us much financially until year four, but it is a step in the right direction. Taking this step however, will be a challenge for families who have more than two children. We feel that more OCS families will be applying for financial scholarships for next year. The need for designated giving to our scholarship fund is going to be more important than ever. Would you prayerfully consider giving to the OCS scholarship fund so that we have the resources to assist those in need? Any amount would be a blessing!
Another change that has taken place at OCS is the resignation of our school secretary, Mrs. Cathy Turner. Mrs. Turner was offered a position with the city of Oroville and began her new job on January 2. We will greatly miss Mrs. Turner, but rejoice with her in this move. Mrs. Turner began training our new secretary, Mrs. Sara Kroll on December 4th. We as a staff are delighted to have Sara on board full-time!
The school year is rapidly flying by and our kids are growing by leaps and bounds. They are not only growing physically and intellectually, but most importantly spiritually. Thank you for praying for our school! Because of your prayers and financial gifts, we can continue to make a difference in the Oroville community.
