Merry, Merry Christmas! Yes, you are reading this correctly. There are many who do not like to think of Christmas before Thanksgiving, but in the case of Angel Tree, the behind the scene work has begun.
What is Angel Tree? Angel Tree is a program of Prison Fellowship that connects parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts and the sharing of the “Good News of Jesus Christ.” Angel Tree can help to bridge the gap between the incarcerated parent and his/her children as a means of letting the children know that they are still loved and thought of despite their physical separation. Angel Tree is one of Prison Fellowship's support systems for the prisoner and family to reconcile to God and to one another.
Our church is one of thousands that annually participate in this program. What does that mean to our congregation? Each year we have the amazing opportunity to ministry to prisoners' families by purchasing gifts for their children on their behalf as an assurance to these children that they have not been forgotten while mom or dad is in prison. This year we have been blessed to reach out and serve 84 children from 44 families in the greater Oroville area. Each child will receive 2 gifts – an item of clothing and a fun gift. Each gift has a $25.00 value.
So, what can you do to support this ministry? First, be praying that we can connect with each of these families which at times can be quite challenging. Second, consider buying a gift or providing funds for a gift to be purchased. Third, be available to deliver these gifts and share the Gospel with the families.
For over 20 years, Oroville Evangelical Free Church has been joining with Angel Tree “to change lives, minds, and communities through Jesus Christ.” So, if you would like to spread Christmas Joy to these children, we will have a table set-up in the foyer beginning Sunday, November 19th with gift tags available with the specific gift requests. Come and see us then or if you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 532-1029.
Serving Christ Together,
Tim and Laura Giordano
