Family Worship

My philosophy of youth ministry, one which I have communicated several times with our church body, and one which I made clear even before I brought on as Youth Pastor, is that my role is to supplement the spiritual nourishment that my students are receiving at home. Parents are to be the primary spiritual providers to their children; not the pastor, not the youth pastor, not the Sunday School teacher. Of course, there are going to be exceptions to this as there are going to be Christian kids that have non-Christian parents and it is in these cases that other Christians should step in to provide a spiritual foundation. But God’s plan for the family is that spiritual instruction is received pr

Thanksgiving: The Forgotten Holiday

Sandwiched somewhere between Halloween and Christmas is a Thursday holiday that is slowly becoming more minuscule in the minds of millions of Americans. Thanksgiving. If you search hard, you might find one small section of Thanksgiving cards, autumn decorations, and a turkey platter amid the aisles and miles of Halloween costumes, Christmas decorations, and toys. For some, Thanksgiving is a day to get a list together prior to a day of marathon Christmas shopping. Somehow our perception of Thanksgiving Day has gone askew. We've forgotten the reason for celebration that first Thanksgiving. Gratitude for survival! Historically we think of Thanksgiving as a time of feasting for the Pilgrims and

Angel Tree

Merry, Merry Christmas! Yes, you are reading this correctly. There are many who do not like to think of Christmas before Thanksgiving, but in the case of Angel Tree, the behind the scene work has begun. What is Angel Tree? Angel Tree is a program of Prison Fellowship that connects parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts and the sharing of the “Good News of Jesus Christ.” Angel Tree can help to bridge the gap between the incarcerated parent and his/her children as a means of letting the children know that they are still loved and thought of despite their physical separation. Angel Tree is one of Prison Fellowship's support systems for the prisoner an

The Pastor's Pen

Over the past several weeks, as we have been looking for a house that we could call our own, we have gone in out and out of many different places. We’ve looked at the features of each place: the number of rooms, the size, the location, the age, the neighborhood, and a number of other factors as we sought out the place from which we could serve in our ministry in Oroville. One day as we were looking at a place and walking through it, my wife turned to me and said, “I feel at home here.” At that point, we knew that we had better act quickly because the housing market is limited and competitive. Thankfully, in the Lord’s good providence, our offer on that house was accepted, and we have now beg
